February 2007

Our next meeting is Thursday,...

February 1st in the SHHS Cafeteria. Starting at 7PM, the agenda will include, discussion of the closing of our 8-9 band room, update on NYC itinerary, close-out of our frozen food fundraiser, final payments for NYC, an initiative to purchase tuxes for our boys, and private lessons. These meetings are for every parent who has a child in the band. Come on!

Upcoming performance dates:

Winter color guard is off to a great start

With their show, Primavera Portena in really good shape. In our first competition at Dobyns-Bennett High School, the color guard placed 1st in class High School National division. This placed us ahead of Volunteer HS, class champions at CIPA championships last year. We want to invite all to come and support us in our next local competition, March 3rd at Freedom Hall

It’s time to complete payment for NYC!!!!!

We must complete payments for all students and adults going on our trip to Carnegie Hall by Monday, February 5th.

This will give us the chance to deposit all checks and send the final payment in on February 7th (our absolute deadline). The monies turned in with the frozen food fundraiser on February 1 will count towards this trip at 45%. In other words, a student selling $100 of frozen food and turning in the money on February 1st will receive a credit of $45.00 on their trip account.

Those who cannot complete payment must contact the band directors to discuss their options All monies up to $600 per person are now nonrefundable by agreement with the travel agents.

Please check your account statements, write your checks and submit as soon as possible. Mr. Foster will be a very busy man with the money coming in next week, the sooner the better to complete this process.

March 3rd color guard show.

This event is not just for color guard members and their parents. Last year, this event contributed $5,000 to our general fund, helping keep our band fees amongst the lowest in our area. For the students, this event counts as community service hours. We will have signups for them to volunteer two weeks in advance. Parents will have a chance to sign up at our Feb. 1 and March 1 meetings.

We will have 12 extra tickets available to the New York Philharmonic concert on March 24th and the Wicked show on March 7th. These tickets are available at $75.00 each. We will accept checks beginning at 7PM on February 1st for those who wish to attend these events. Checks payable to SHHS Band.

Clothing for NYC

The weather in New York is quite variable at the end of March. It can feel like spring, or there can be snow in the air. Packing for the time on the street and moving around NYC will have to done very close to the time for departure and lots of checking with the Weather Channel.

There are several events on the trip that require appropriate dress. Coat and tie with dress slacks and shoes are necessary for the New York Philharmonic and the Dinner Cruise for our young people. It is not necessary to dress up to attend Wicked. Casual-dressy (no blue jeans, no t-shirts) is required for Wicked.

For the parents, you will want to be dressed coat and tie for the event in Carnegie Hall.

Other things to consider: We will be walking a lot in NYC. On Sunday, we will walk a lot in lower Manhattan between the Statute of Liberty, Ellis Island, Ground Zero, Wall Street, Fulton Street, and South Street Seaport. Good supportive shoes and comfort will be very important for all of us to consider on this day.

Fees/Payments

We are concerned that some of our students and parents are not getting the word about payment of fees. Managing a band program of this size and activity level requires a massive amount of book keeping and accountability on the part of the directors, the booster treasurer, and the staff. Being placed in the situation of badgering students and parents to complete their obligations takes away from our time taking care of kids. Please take the time to read the notices sent home and respond immediately.
