Our next meeting is Thursday,...
February 7th in the SHHS Cafeteria. Starting at 7PM, the agenda will include: Forms and payment for the Tournament of Roses Trip, Kick-off of our frozen food fundraiser, Clinic schedules, discussion of band uniforms for next year, and private lessons. These meetings are for every parent who has a child in the band. Come on!
Upcoming performance dates:
Colorguard for next year will begin training sessions on Thursday Feb. 14th.
We will train from 3-4PM for three weeks, then auditions will begin on March 3rd and end on March 7th.
Color guard is open to all members of the SHHS Band who want to try flag and/or rifle for the fall. Students who are not part of the band program will complete a teacher recommendation form as part of the audition process.
This is a chance for students who did not join in middle school to become part of our program. We are working on how to move forward with our guard program from next year. Hopefully, a plan will be in place in about a month.

It’s time to make the deposit for TOR!!!!!
To reserve airline tickets, it is important that we have your account up to $500.00 as soon as possible. We cannot use other monies from others accounts to purchase your ticket, so the goal is to get everyone up to the $500.00 level as soon as possible. The airline industry has changed immensely in the past few years. In past trips, we were able to reserve 300—500 tickets with a mere phone call. Now, they want the money up front!!
If your child does not have the complete amount, please deposit what you can and continue to make deposits as often as possible. As soon as the money is available to purchase the ticket, we will confirm the reservation.
The only concern is that ticket prices will rise, making the trip more expensive as time progresses. We will do all that we can to assist in this process.
A bit of history: According to the list supplied by Tournament of Roses, only three band programs in the state of Tennessee have been a part of the Tournament of Roses parade: John Overton from Nashville, Dobyns-Bennett HS, and Science Hill High School. With world-wide television coverage that numbers in the multi-millions, this is the largest public-relations exposure ever for the Science Hill and Johnson City, TN. We will have extra forms available at our meeting, and money-forms can be turned in at our band booster meeting.
Please do not send TOR money-forms to the band office. Use the P.O. Box:

Be sure that all names to be credited are indicated with the payments.
Private lessons/Clinic results
We are having some very good response with students starting on private lessons in our program. This will improve your child as a musician and help build self confidence as a player. In the past, we have had as many as 50% of our students involved in lessons. That number is hovering slightly over 20% this year. If we can help you line up with a teacher, please feel free to call the band office or consult with a band director at our meetings.
Private lessons have a direct impact on chair auditions, clinic auditions, and scholarships. While we feel our staff does a great job of helping all kids succeed, we cannot get the kind of individual attention that is necessary to help all kids in our band. There are just too many. We encourage you to invest this extra money in helping your child feel even more successful as part of the Science Hill HS Band.
Band Clinic great success
We had another great weekend for our band clinic. Great conductors from Appalachian State, ETSU, and Georgia were in to help our students on their quest of concert excellence. The students were exemplary in all areas of musicianship, attendance, and behavior.
Our many thanks to Patty Richards for obtaining the grants that made this clinic available to everyone. She made sure this great and unique program remains as part of our band program. When you have a moment, please express your appreciation to the sponsors:
Every clinician bragged about the great things our kids achieved. Thanks kids!
