September 2007

Our next meeting is Thursday, September 6th in the SHHS Cafeteria.

Starting at 7PM, the agenda will include: information about our fall performance schedule, kick off our annual Pledge Carwash, and plans for the remainder of the year. These meetings are for every parent (8-12) who has a child in the band. Come on!

How the Carwash works: Every child should sell pledges and every child will need to wash cars on September 15th!!!

Each child in band grades 9-12 has received a carwash pledge sheet. The request is for people to pledge one penny for every car we wash as a band. With our annual goal of 1,000 cars in one day, a penny pledge will give a $10.00 donation. (This donation is 100% profit for your child).

If your child gets 20 people to pledge a penny, that is $200.00 towards their individual account! That is money that doesn’t come out of your pocket! Our rain date is September 22nd!

Every HS Band member then comes on Saturday and works for four hours washing cars (9-1 or 1-5), collects the pledges, and turns in the money by September 28th.

Where does the pledge car wash money go? As in past years, every child in competitive band has to help defray the costs of travel for the fall. We call this our fair-share amount. For this fall, the amount is $200.00 per student. Some people just pay the money in a check, others donate through the car wash, others get people to donate and pay for this cost through the pledges. Any money raised above these costs will roll-over into the student’s individual accounts and can be used for the cost of our next major trip (08-09) and other costs such as uniform parts, etc.

We will need parent help to support the carwash. If you haven’t signed up yet to monitor a site, the carwash chairs will be there on Thursday night to sign you up.

The sewing committee needs your help!

Under their able general, Serena Crowder, the sewing committee has their hands full getting the many flags needed for our show. Any band parent can help and you don’t have to sew! They need help with cutting, ironing, etc. Please contact: Serena Crowder 833-1544 or Donna Royston 747-1108 for a schedule. This effort saves our band about $10,000 a year! Thanks to all the parents who have made these great flags for us. If you can help in the final push to complete this mammoth project, see Serena at our meeting.

Battle of the Drumlines!

Something new! Our percussion section, along with sections from: Tennessee High, Sullivan East, Sullivan South, Sullivan North, Sullivan Central, Elizabethton, Unicoi County, Happy Valley and Dobyns-Bennett will be competing in the first ever Battle of the Drum lines at Winged Deer Park on Tuesday, September 18th. This no-charge event will have 10-minute performances for each group and prizes for all the performers. The show starts at 6:30PM. Bring dinner, some earplugs, and be ready to annoy the neighbors at the new Goulding amphitheatre off Carroll Creek Road.

Concession stands needs your help!

With our first home game already past, we have JV and 8th grade games held every week at our stadium. With a full slate of home games this year, this effort is important to keep the general fund in healthy state and pay for staff members who help our band. See our committee chairs at the meeting to sign up and help. As the heat is coming off, it actually can be a lot of fun.

Committees are doing great!

Go to our website: www.shhsbandboosters.org and check out all the information on our committees and their activities. For every parent, there is a way for you to become involved. Perhaps there is something that you can do that we haven’t thought of yet. Let us know, we want every parent to have a way to help their child succeed in the Science Hill Band.

Contest Information

We are avoiding posting our contest sites to avoid other groups making decisions based upon our attendance. Here are some rough schedules for these new contests

Band Booster Emails:

To receive band booster emails, you can go to the web site (www.shhsbandboosters.org) and subscribe. Choose the "Subscription" menu item, and provide your email address. You will now receive band-booster emails, keeping you up to date with the latest band booster information

The Eighth Grade band corner:

Why am I getting a High School Band newsletter? Based upon our past history, it is a great way for you to become aware of the wonderful opportunities ahead for your child. It is also a way for you to become involved and contribute to our program. We love this group of kids and feel they have a bright future ahead in our band. We start on our music for the homecoming performance next week. The performance is on September 29th and will be a great night for you and your child.
