Our next meeting is Thursday,...
December 6th in the SHHS Cafeteria. Starting at 7PM, the agenda will include information for the December concerts, clinic auditions, how money is collected for our fruit sale, tryout results, and how to sign up for the trip to Tournament of Roses. These meetings are for every parent who has a child in the band. Come on!
The Fruit arrives on Saturday!!!!
A very successful sale which helps make travel available to every child in our program. Also included in this mailing is a schedule prepared by our fruit chair, Barney Anderson. Please check the schedule for your pickup time and plan on arriving a few minutes early to collect your paperwork. We must have a schedule to avoid having people wait around for hours, so please plan on arriving at your scheduled time.
To get to Epic Warehouse from JC, take I-26 towards Asheville. Take the Okolona Road exit. At the bottom of the ramp take a right, take your next right towards Epic. As you enter the factory gate, turn left, then take your next right into the warehouse area. You will pickup your fruit package from the station at the head of the line and continue forward until you pickup your complete order.
Truck delivery for orders over $1,000. We have asked the students to schedule times for picking up their fruit. Times have been scheduled geographically to minimize mileage charges on the trucks (currently 60cents per mile). Please check with your child if you have one of these large orders. Arrive at Epic at the assigned time, check your order, then follow the truck to your house to unload.
Some things to remember about fruit:
The kids should take care of loading the fruit. Bring your child along and let them do the lifting. It is good for them to work. The parent should do the counting. It is very important that you leave the warehouse with your exact order so you can deliver all of your fruit accurately.
How to complete the sale successfully:
Fruit does not keep if it is not stored properly. It should be kept in an unheated area where it will not freeze until delivery. A carport or garage is ideal. The best situation is to deliver your fruit on Saturday, but delivery through Monday evening should cause no concerns. After Monday, depending upon the weather and your storage area, you will need to be very careful. It is best to check your fruit before delivery. We will have extra fruit to replace any damaged or rotten fruit until 4PM on Monday. At that point, any extra fruit will be available for sale at the 10-12 band room.
Collect your money upon delivery. It is imperative that we receive all monies by December 12th. We have a bill to pay for the fruit on that date. All checks made payable to SHHS Band. On December 12th, please turn in all monies that you have collected. If we have to wait for one check, it is better than waiting for dozens of checks. Monies must be turned in before Christmas Break to receive your full credit for your child’s fund raising efforts.
Johnson City Band Clinic
This year, we will be holding our clinic on January 25th and 26th, 2008. Three college band directors will be in to work with our Freshman band, Symphonic band, and Wind Ensemble. We will not be able to involve the 8th grade band this year because we do not have another band room to work with. We apologize to the 8th grade band members, however, we have no other option. Our schedule is:
Friday, January 25th, 3PM-6PM. Break for dinner, 7PM-9PM.
Saturday: 9AM-Noon. Lunch Break, 1PM-3PM.
Concert begins at 6:30PM. Concert order is: Freshman, Symphonic, and Wind Ensemble.
With concert band being the center piece of our program, we feel it is important that we put as much emphasis here as we do on marching band.
All East Band Clinic...
will have auditions in January. Senior Clinic auditions are January 12th at South Doyle High School, and Junior Clinic auditions are January 19th at Cherokee High School. Each student needs to arrive about 45-60 minutes before they are scheduled to audition. Some audition rooms move faster than expected, and some students won’t show up to audition. This allows each student enough time to warm up without feeling rushed.
December Concerts Are Soon!!
This year, we will be presenting two concerts:
Monday night December 10th will feature the Percussion Ensemble and Eighth Grade Band.
Tuesday night, December 11th will feature the Freshman Band and the 10-12 Band. The concerts begin at 7:30 PM and will last about one hour. We encourage students and parents to attend and stay through the entire concert so they can enjoy the talents of every band at SHHS. The music is coming along great. Tickets are $5.00.
Private lessons:
With the change to 45-minute periods for next year, we are faced with the need to up our private lesson participation for the Science Hill High School Band. With the luxury of 90-minute classes for the past ten years, we have been able to get the job done for the vast majority of students. This is going to take some adjustments with marching band rehearsals moving completely to after-school on Tuesday s and Thursdays and an increased responsibility on the students to practice individually. Private teachers help immensely in the musical growth of your child. If we can help you find a qualified instructor, let us know.
Instruments and mouthpieces.
The holidays are a great time to invest in a quality instrument or upgraded mouthpiece for your child. Call the band office for advice on your gift.
