Frozen Food Fundraiser...
will begin on Thursday, February 12th at the band booster meeting. The event will run through March 5th. All proceeds of the sale will go toward each student’s account. Although there are no significant travel plans for the ’09-’10 school year, we are currently planning a significant trip for the ’10-’11 school year (more info later this Spring).
Tournament of Roses pictures orders are due February 13th. Order forms can be found beside the stereo equipment at the front of the room. Please make checks out to SHHS Band Boosters.
Private Lessons
One of the main components of a nationally recognized band program is the inclusion of a significant private lesson program. This will improve your child as a musician and help build self confidence as a player. In the past, we have had as many as 50% of our students involved in lessons. That number is hovering slightly over 15% this year. If we can help you line up with a teacher, please feel free to call the band office (232-2193) or consult with a band director at our meetings.
Private lessons have a direct impact on chair auditions, clinic auditions, and scholarships. While we feel our staff does a great job of helping all kids succeed, we cannot get the kind of individual attention that is necessary to help all kids in our band. There are just too many. We encourage you to invest this extra money in helping your child feel even more successful as part of the Science Hill HS Band.
Mentoring Program
The mentoring program’s inaugural year was a great success. We will be instituting the program again this year and encourage all HS students to participate. Our students volunteer their time to work with our 8th grade students and receive community service time for doing so. This is a wonderful introduction to private lessons for our younger students. Students have volunteered and will be paired with the 8th graders this week.

Band Clinic
Due to the lack of planning time with the change in leadership, the traditional band clinic weekend has been altered for this year. We will still have several clinicians for each band, but will have multiple clinicians as well as planned masterclasses for sections in each group (depending on funding). Clinicians for this year will include: Joe Hermann and Eric Harris from Tenn Tech, John Ross and Scott Tobias from App. State, Christian Zembower from ETSU, and Don Peach from Lincolnton, NC, among others. These clinics have been made possible through grants funded by: The Harris Fund, Arts Fund for East Tennessee, Arts Build Communities.
Appalachian Classical Association Music Camp Classic
Registrations are available in the band room. This clinic will be held at Milligan College on March 28 and include performances by the SHHS Orchestra and the Dobyns-Bennett Orchestra. The clinic will include masterclasses, workshops, ensemble rehearsals, and performances. It is geared toward aspiring junior and senior musicians.
