On February 10, 2004, tragedy struck the Science Hill band family with the death of 17-year old junior band student Whitney Broome in an automobile accident. Because Whitney loved the band and her band friends so much, her family initiated a fund in memory of Whitney to benefit the band.

This fund is administered by the Science Hill High School band booster organization. To date, all money collected has been placed in CD’s or equivalent financial instruments designed to safeguard the principal. This fund has been allowed to accumulate through the years from interest on the principal as well as new donations. Recently, the fund exceeded $10,000.
The current plan is to use the interest beginning in fiscal year 2008-2009 to subsidize private lessons for a band student. Private lessons can go a long way to further music education by supplementing the group instruction provided by the band directors with personal instruction tailored to the abilities and needs of a specific student. Future donations will continue to be added to the principal, thus generating more interest for more private lessons.
To contribute, please send your check payable to “SHHS Band Boosters”. Clearly indicate this is for the Broome Memorial Fund. If you would like a receipt for tax purposes, please indicate this as well. Donations of any amount are welcomed and appreciated.
